Cameron (25), who teaches at Kemnay Academy in Aberdeenshire, was delighted to claim the title with a personal best time.

“That’s my best by four or five seconds so I am pleased and can’t really complain.

“I had never been to Inverness until this weekend, it was a very new experience, but a nice route along the river and very flat. It was such a nice day and very little wind.

“I have been with Aberdeen Amateur Club for a few years and been with Edinburgh Athletic Club before that.

“I will look to do more one or two more 5k’s and aim for the track season as I usually do 1500 metres.”

In the men’s 5k, Latvian athlete Denis Prikulis, who runs for Lochaber Athletics Club in Fort William, won the title for the first time in his career.

In the Inverness Half Marathon, Dundee athlete Jamie Crowe won the men’s title with Nancy Scott winning the women’s title.
