Nairn Golf Club member is crowned Scottish Golf North Matchplay champion after winning final in Forres
MUIR of Ord golfer Jamie Whittet came out on top as he claimed victory in the Scottish Golf North Matchplay final.
The Nairn Golf Club member defeated David Joel from Inverness Golf Club 3&2 to lift the title.
Whittet (31) claimed the title for the first time in his career when he won the final held at Forres Golf Club.
The project engineer said it was a tough final but says he was delighted to win with a couple of holes to spare.
He said: “It was a good match and David was playing well in the final.
“But I managed to get a bit of luck and managed to hold on to the lead with a few good putts.
“I don’t always see the putts go in, so it was nice to see them go in.
“The final was tight most of the way, but I managed to push away at the 14th hole and go on and win it.”
The competition sees the top eight players from the North District Championship in May go on to compete at the North Matchplay which takes place through the rest of the year.
The dates and neutral venues of quarter finals, semi finals and finals are arranged between the players.
Whittet, who only joined as a member of Nairn Golf Club earlier this year, says he considers the course as one of the best in the area.
He also set the course record at Muir of Golf Club four years ago.
He also won the North District Order of Merit from his performances in 10 competitions throughout the season.
He says 2025 was one of his best golf years in terms of success in competitions.
He said: “Winning the North Matchplay is up there and I would certainly put it in my top achievements.
“I am happy that I was good enough to beat a really good player like David in the final.
“I have had three really good wins in competitions this year, so I am happy with how my golf has gone.”
Delighted with his success this year, Whittet says his performances in competitions has made him determined to do even better in 2026.
“Looking back on how things have gone, I am quite happy,” he said.
“However, I do consider myself a bit of a perfectionist and always think that I can always do a bit better when it comes to sport.
“I’ll take a small break and play some golf during the winter, but don’t plan very much and there is nothing on the cards.
“But I will be looking towards next year.”
