More success for Inverness orienteers at British championships
Twenty athletes from Inverness orienteering club (INVOC) attended the British Orienteering Championships at the weekend, held this year in the Lake District.
The event was held over two days with an individual competition and a team relay. The locations for this year were Grasmere and Bigland.
Both these areas involve highly technical map-reading skills to navigate over the complex terrain, and physical ability of cross-country running over the hills and undergrowth.
Iain Harding from INVOC won his M35 age category. Others who achieved their championship standard were Henrik Borrowman, 7th M16, Douglas McDonald, 8th M16, Laurence Cload, 5th M45, Jo Shepherd, 6th W21.
At the relays, there were further technical courses, with leading teams often making time-costly errors due to the increased pressure of head-to-head racing.
INVOC members Iain Harding, Nick Carter and Laurence Cload won the Men’s Short Relay.
Ewan Thompson, Henrik Borrowman and Douglas McDonald were 2nd on M18, while the Women’s Short Relay team of Hazel Cload, Lily Carter and Zoe Harding came a close 4th.
It follows a successful showing at the Scottish Orienteering Championships when the Inverness junior teams excelled.
INVOC president Laurence Cload said: “Well done to all who took part. Thanks to Lakeland OC and West Cumberland OC for planning and organising. It was a great event.”
