Inverness Caledonian Thistle Women manager Karen Mason is hoping a free weekend will do her squad good before the start of the 2021/22 season.

The Caley Jags are currently in a pre-season programme organised by Scottish Women’s Football, but with this Sunday’s scheduled opponents Dundee City West pulling out Mason could not find an alternative side to face.

With two or three players suffering from lengthy or recurring injuries though, it is a chance for players to recover and refocus ahead of the final preparations for the Championship North campaign – which starts in early August.

It might come at a good time for performances on the pitch too, as Inverness had been below par by their own high standards.

A 5-0 defeat to Montrose left a sour taste in the mouth, before last weekend’s 3-2 win away at Dryburgh Athletic threatened to go the same way until Inverness launched a comeback.

As far as Mason is concerned though, now the real work starts to perfect tactics, selections and generally improve before the first day of the competitive season next month.

“The league isn’t that far away, so I don’t think it’s a bad thing to have a free weekend just before it all starts coming thick and fast again on August 8,” Mason said.

“I wouldn’t say we’ve gotten to grips with it completely, it has been an opportunity to get some players minutes under their belts.

“From now on in, I think it will be more concentrating on what our starting 11 will be.

“It has been up and down so far, we started off pretty well but we had a dip against Montrose.

“We managed to pick it up again to win last weekend, albeit without putting in a sterling performance – it showed grit and determination to come back from a couple of goals down.

“There is still time for us to put these things that are going wrong for us at the moment right.”
