Top athletes from across Scotland are set to head to Inverness to take part at the Caley Marina Fours/Quads and Small Boats Head which takes place this weekend.

Organisers are saying they are set to welcome the biggest entry of rowers in the event’s history as they will take to the water on Saturday and Sunday.

Racing will be held over 4500 metres on a stretch of water on the Caledonian Canal between Dochgarroch and Torvean.

There will be three divisions held each day with the event set to start on Saturday morning at 10am with racing on Sunday set to begin at 9.30am.

Inverness Rowing Club honorary president Roy Sinclair says organisers are confident this weekend will be a successful event with top rowing action.

Last year, one day of the event was cancelled due to weather conditions, but they are not expecting such problems this weekend.

He said: “It is the biggest entry that we have had as we have over 100 more crews than we have ever had before.

“There will be three divisions held each day with an early start each morning.

“The weather conditions look good for the weekend and we hope we won’t have a problem like last year when heavy mist forced the cancellation of racing.

“Crews are coming from across Scotland to take part in the event this weekend.”

Sinclair says the Caledonian Canal is rated as one of the best venues for rowing competitions in Scotland.

He said: “The canal is much better than some rivers if they are in spate.

“It is not a problem we have in Inverness because the water is pretty flat.

“There has only been one event cancelled in 30 years when we had five inches of ice.

But it is almost certain we have good conditions and the event will take place.”
