World champion kickboxer Aidan Lennan selected for Great Britain squad at the European Championships as Inverness teenager looks to leave junior ranks with a flourish
Inverness teenager Aidan Lennan has been called up to the Great Britain squad to compete at the WAKO Youth European Championships later this year.
The UHI student, who was named Scotland’s young athlete of the year for 2024 after claiming multiple world championship trophies, will be heading out to Jesolo, Italy in September to compete on the continental stage.
He will be competing across three disciplines in the under-63kg weight class: points, light contact and kick light.
Lennan has previous form at the European Championships, winning a gold medal in light contact when it was held in Budapest in 2023.
However, this year’s competition may hold some extra significance for him as it will be his last year competing in the junior age group, so he will want to go out in style before moving into the senior categories.
It is something of an unexpected trip to Italy, given that the event was originally due to be held in Portugal earlier in the summer, but circumstances outwith the governing body’s control forced a change of venue and date.
Before September, Lennan will be keeping busy both in training and competition.
He is due to compete in the WAKO Hungarian World Cup next month, returning to the setting where Lennan became the number one ranked fighter in the world at his age and weight by virtue of winning two world titles last August.
That competition will then be followed by training camps with Kickboxing GB in early July and a Legends Summer Training Camp for 10 days in Greece straight afterwards.
