INVERNESS golfer Russell Knox claimed victory in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open after a sudden death play-off.

The former Culloden Academy pupil forced an extra hole at the 18th when he nailed a 40 foot putt to draw level with New Zealander Ryan Fox on 14 under par.

He repeated the feat from almost exactly the same spot in the play-off while Fox conceded defeat after missing a putt from close range.

Knox's victory at Ballyliffin in Dongeal was his first ever tournament win in Europe and followed up from finishing runner-up at the French Open the previous weekend.

His victory is expected to propel the world number 87 into the top 50 in the world rankings
