Inverness Caledonian Thistle missed the chance to move closer out of the relegation zone when they went down to their heaviest defeat of the season in League One against Cove Rangers at the Caledonian Stadium.

Inverness had a nightmare first quarter when Declan Glass and Mitch Megginson put Cove two goals in front after 20 minutes.

Remi Savage pulled one back for Inverness before half time. But Arron Darge restored their two-goal advantage early in the second half.

Adam Emslie then scored a thunderous low drive in injury time to seal a 4-1 victory.

The defeat means they are now nine points behind Annan Athletic in eighth place, who drew 1-1 with Queen of the South in Dumfries.

Dumbarton, who are bottom of the table, are now only three points behind Inverness after beating Kelty Hearts 2-0.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle named an unchanged starting line-up to the team that beat Stenhousemuir 1-0 at Ochil View.

Cove Rangers took the lead after five minutes in a counter attack move when goalkeeper Musa Dibaga did well to save shots from Megginson and Emslie.

But he couldn’t stop Declan Glass finding the net at the third time of asking to give the Aberdonians the lead.

Inverness then doubled their advantage in the 20th minute when after a short corner kick, Connor Scully played the ball into the box to find Mitch Megginson who nodded it past Dibaga into the top right corner.

But the hosts pulled one back eight minutes before half time when Paull Allan’s cross into the box found Savage. His shot from eight yards out crossed the line before the Cove defence could clear it to make it 2-1.

Inverness made a change at half time as Ethan Cairns came on for Matthew Strachan as they looked to boost their attacking options up front.

But five minutes into the second half, Cove Rangers restored their two-goal advantage.

Declan Glass’ free kick into the box found the head of Darge who beat the Inverness defence in the air to flick into the bottom right corner.

Cove looked comfortable for the majority of the second half and wrapped up victory in injury time when Emslie fired a thunderous low drive from the edge of the18-yard box past Dibaga into the bottom right corner.

Inverness will look to get back to winning ways when they face bottom of the table Dumbarton at the Caledonian Stadium on Saturday, January 4.
