Inverness Caledonian Thistle have confirmed Danny Devine has become the club’s new captain with immediate effect.

Devine was previously serving as vice captain but now assumes the role of captain with Billy Mckay relinquishing captain duties as he supports head coach Scott Kellacher in his player-coach role.

Kellacher took over after former manager Duncan Ferguson was made redundant by administrators BDO last week.

Devine has played 228 games for the club and has scored 10 goals. He rejoined the club in 2020 after previously playing for Inverness between 2013 and 2016.

Speaking on the Inverness Caledonian Thistle YouTube channel, Devine says he is looking forward to the challenge of becoming club captain.

He said: “I’m very excited. We’re in a difficult position right now but I’m very excited that Kell and the coaching staff have put their faith in me. I’m looking forward to stepping up and leading the boys.

“Billy has taken on a different role on the coaching side and I am obviously excited to step up.

“Leadership is a massive part of being a captain. There are different types of leadership and different people show it in different ways on and off the park.

“I will be there when the boys need me and be that link between the changing room and the coaching staff. I have had good experience of playing under good captains, hopefully I can learn from them and do a good job.”

Devine missed last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at Dumbarton due to illness, but is set to return for Saturday’s clash against fifth place Kelty Hearts.

Inverness are bottom of League One following being deducted 15 points since going into administration last week and are 12 points behind Dumbarton in ninth.

Devine says everyone is in a positive mindframe but is also appreciated the difficult situation the club is in. However, he says the club are determined to starting put together wins to attempt to get off the bottom of the table.

“We have come back in with a smile on our faces and look forward to the next game and be positive.

“We are not losing sight of the situation that we are in, but we are trying to be as positive as we can. The boys are working hard and that is all we can just now.

“A positive mindset is the best way to go . All the negativity in the last weeks and months we need to put to the back of our minds and move forward.

“Hopefully we can move forward in a positive light. We have to come together as a whole, coaching staff, players and staff behind the scenes. The fans will be important in the next few months it has been a difficult period for everyone. They come here on Saturday expecting us to win and hopefully we can do that and send them away happy.”
