Inverness basketball club Highland Bears win Scottish Cup as they defeat St Mirren in final in Dundee





Highland Bears have won the under-16 Scottish Cup after they defeated St Mirren in the final with a 60-56 victory.

The Inverness club have won a Scottish title for the first time in over 20 years after picking up victory in Dundee on Saturday afternoon.

Highland Bears were going into the final full of confidence when they spoke in training before the match.

Both teams could not be separated in the first quarter as they were tied at 17-17.

But the Inverness club began to stamp their authority on the match as they took a five point lead at half time 39-34.

They extended their lead to seven points as they went into a 53-46 lead going into the final quarter.

They then held off a fightback from St Mirren but saw out victory to win by four points.

Grace Alexander was named as the most valuable player as she scored 29 points during the match.

The Highland Bears under-16 girls squad has around 20 players who train twice a week at Inverness Royal Academy and play matches during the weekend.

The under-16 squad also has a number of players who have been promoted from under-14 level. The club in total has eight different age groups where they field teams.

The success of the club has also been shown in the number of players who have been selected to play for Scotland at various age levels.
