INVERNESS Athletic should not already be playing catch-up in the North Caledonian League according to manager Shane Carling.

The club have suffered a poor start to the season having lost two of their first three games of the campaign.

They are already nine points behind leaders Thurso at the top of the table.

They lie in sixth place with only an opening day 7–1 victory against Bunillidh Thistle being a positive outcome this season.

Carling says his team should be doing better with the personnel he has in his squad

“We need to get ourselves back to winning ways as we have had a rubbish start to the season,” said Carling.

“Getting beat twice by St Duthus in the league and cup is something that shouldn’t be happening with the squad that we have got.”

“We need to get back to winning ways again otherwise it is going to be a long season.

“We should be competing with teams like these in the league and hopefully we can do it.”

Athletic could have up to 10 players back into the squad after their 3-0 defeat at Orkney.

Carling admitted he has been missing key personnel at the beginning of the NCL campaign.

But he is confident the strength of the squad will show in the next few weeks.

“I would say there were eight key players who were missing for us against Orkney.

“But we should have most of the players back when we face Invergordon.”

Athletic will be looking to beat Invergordon for the first time in the club’s history when they travel to Ross-shire.

But Carling said three points at Recreation Park is a must to kick start their stuttering league campaign.

“Invergordon are a tough team.

“Last year we were beaten 4-3 on two occasions against them when in both games we were leading 3-2.

“In both of those games we lost two goals in the last five minutes.

“But we will have more boys back for us on Saturday and we will have every chance of beating them.”

Elsewhere St Duthus take on Bonar Bridge, Bunillidh host Golspie and Thurso welcome Orkney.
