Inverness athletes make up half of Scotland squad for UK Invitational Tang Soo Do Championships ahead of Highland club hosting World Championships later this year

Inverness athletes made up half of the Scotland squad that competed in the recent UK Invitational Tang Soo Do competition.

Over 300 competitors from across the UK, Netherlands, Poland, Greece, Canada and the USA descended on Cardiff to test themselves against the best the sport has to offer.

Scotland took a 16-person squad down to Wales, with eight of that number representing Inverness Tang Soo Do – a significant increase on the trio that competed at the event last year.

Black belt team members Jemma Wheeler, Jake Keir, Addison Keir and Ailish Boyd were among those selected, but despite coping well in some very tough categories the medals came from elsewhere.

In fact, there was widespread success from the Cho Dan Bo blue belts, with 12-year-olds Layla Urquhart and Blythe Gajda winning two bronze medals in weapons and sparring, and two silver medals in the same categories respectively.

Two more athletes won a gold, silver and bronze medal each.

Arwen Boyd (13) took bronze in sparring, a silver in forms and won the weapons competition.

The same set of results was earned by Lily Fraser (14) in her categories.

For all eight of the athletes, it was a good experience leading into the Scottish National Championships next month, before an exciting opportunity in August.

Then, the World Championships will be coming to Inverness after Scotland Tang Soo Do were awarded the competition two years ago.

Entries for the World Championships in Inverness will close at the end of May.
