INVERNESS teenager Megan Keith has been called up for Scotland to compete at the British Athletics Cross Challenge.

The 17-year-old will join Kirkhill athlete Mhairi Maclennan in the squad to compete in Liverpool next Saturday.

Maclennan runs at senior level and Keith in the under-20 race at what is also the selection event for Great Britain’s squad European Cross Country Championships in Portugal.

Keith’s under-20 place comes after last weekend’s win in the Scottish 4k Short Course Championships in that age group and winning bronze in the senior race.

She’s won European and world junior titles in orienteering, where she is a British squad member, and a good run in Liverpool would see her face Europe’s top juniors in cross country as well.

The international call-up marks an incredible seven days for Keith.

The sixth-year Millburn Academy pupil was named Young Sportswoman of the Year at the Scottish Women in Sport Awards.

In 2017, MacLennan took ninth place in the European under-23 cross country championships and was a member of the winning British team.

She has just returned to competition after an absence of over three months which culminated in a bout of bronchitis. However before yesterday’s team announcement she confirmed that she would compete in Liverpool and in the Scottish squad if selected.

Meanwhile Alex Sutherland (72) runs for Scotland at tomorrow’s British and Irish Veteran Cross Country International in Liverpool.
