The 20-year-old from Inverness will be heading to Braunschweig to play for the New Yorker Lions in the professional German Football League.

The offensive linesman, who played for Highland Wildcats while growing up in Inverness, but is currently at the University of Stirling studying sports science, will make his professional debut when he heads to central Germany in April.

The former Millburn Academy pupil impressed coaches to offer him a contract without even having to leave the country to go for a trial.

“I logged on to a website called Europlayers which is kind of like LinkedIn but for American football,” he said.

“I ended up getting in touch with New Yorker Lions and had a few conversations over the phone and things led from there.

“I didn’t have to go for a trial due to Covid restrictions, but they saw my films and after conversations with the club that was enough for me to sign.

“They are one of the best teams in Germany and I’m really lucky to have an opportunity like this. I have definitely skipped a few levels and I can’t wait to get out there and learn.”

The New Yorker Lions, previously known as Braunschweig Lions, have been German champions 12 times and have won the Eurobowl six times, including four times between 2015 and 2018, making them Germany's most successful team.

They play their home matches at the 24,000 seater Eintracht Stadion.

Kane has represented Great Britain at under-19 level and played against France and Norway.

He says American football in Germany is the highest level in Europe and he can’t wait to test himself against the best players on the continent.

“Britain has a huge influence in the sport due to its large fanbase, but the British Leagues are a lot lower down in ability compared to France, Germany, Spain and even Serbia.

“The GFL is a massive step up and a challenge that I am looking forward to.”

Kane started his career at the Highland Wildcats aged 13 after being spotted by head coach Robbie Paulin at school.

He says he owes the club for everything leading him to become a professional player.

“I got involved at a young age at Wildcats and spent all my time there when I could and loved every minute of it.

“That is where I found my love for football, I wasn’t really a sporty type before that and it changed the course of my life.

"People don’t realise how lucky they are to have such an amazing club in Inverness.

"I am still chatting to Robbie, I am always seeking advice from him and I hope that never changes."
