MHAIRI Maclennan has been selected as part of the Great Britain squad for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships later this month.

The Inverness Harrier from Kirkhill is one of 24 athletes who will be representing their country in Aarhus, Denmark on March 30, and one of the six-strong senior women’s team.

Maclennan ran at the Inter-Counties Cross Country in Loughborough last weekend, which doubled up as trials for world championship selection.

She came third in that race to secure her ticket to Aarhus in two weeks time.

The top six in the trials are the six senior women to be selected, including 2018 European Cross senior team silver medallists Jess Piasecki and Kate Avery.

Amelia Quirk – under-20 team gold medallist – Jenny Nesbitt and Emily Hosker-Thornhill complete the team.

Maclennan, who now races for Edinburgh University Hare and Hounds, is the only Scottish athlete in the senior women’s team.

She changed her lead coach earlier this year, and is now under the tutelage of former Olympic 1500m and 3000m steeplechase runner Helen Clitheroe.
