Inverness and North Kessock athletes help Scotland finish in world top 10
HIGHLAND squash players Greg Lobban, Alasdair Prott, and Martin Ross helped Scotland to 10th place at the World Squash Team Championships in Hong Kong.
Prott and Ross from Inverness along with Lobban from North Kessock and Rory Stewart were part of the four-man team which competed for Scotland at the world championships which concluded last week.
After the group stages of the tournament, Scotland narrowly missed out on the quarter final stages as they were left competing in the 9-16 play-offs.
In the first play-off match, Scotland defeated Czechia 2-0 with Alasdair Prott securing the victory in a 59 minute match against Daniel Mekbib - who is ranked 30 places above him in the world rankings.
Greg Lobban saw off Viktor Byrtus in three games, meaning that Stewart and Ross were not called into action as victory was already sealed in the first two games.
Scotland then defeated Spain 2-0 with Lobban and Stewart both recording 3-1 wins in their respective matches to set up a battle for ninth place with Malaysia in their final game.
However, Scotland were defeated by Malaysia 2-0 as they had to settle for 10th place overall.
Scotland’s women’s team finished in 12th place overall in the tournament.
