PUPILS from Inverness Royal Academy and Kilchuimen Academy in Fort Augustus have been selected to be part of shinty training camp in the United States.

The Camanachd Association have organised a training performance camp in the United States for 43 girls aged between 13 and 17.

The camp is set to take place at Lawrenceville School near New York and will span seven days, providing high-quality shinty coaching.

Participants will enhance their understanding of fitness, technique development, strength and conditioning, nutrition, and emotional development.

In addition to the athletic focus, the camp will offer a rich cultural experience for all attendees.

Pupils from Ardnamurchan High School. Kingussie High School and Portree High School will also be in attendance.

The camp is being supported by the Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport with its chief executive Calum Macpherson saying it was delighted to support the programme.

He said: “Young people currently growing up in the Highlands will play a critical part in the future energy economy of the region.

“As this fantastic initiative shows, there are no barriers to what this up-coming generation can achieve, given the right opportunities.

These young people will be tomorrow’s leaders on and off the field.

“ICFGF is delighted to be supporting a scheme helping to create an equal playing field for young women in sports.

“We believe the benefits of Green Freeport Status can create a wealth of new opportunities that will enhance lives of young people in the Highlands and beyond.”

Active Schools Co-Ordinator for Ardnamurchan Alan Gray said: “The girls are ecstatic, there’s so much energy spilling out of them as they all know it truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity and they are so eager to put into practice all that they have learnt over the last 18 months.

They have each completed a leadership programme as part of the camp build up and we are actually in a position now in Ardnamurchan where there are more girls playing shinty than there are boys!”
