Inverness Caledonian Thistle ended their Betfred League Cup campaign on a high with victory over East Fife.

Shane Sutherland scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half.

But goalkeeper Cammy Mackay was the hero for Inverness as he saved Jack Hamilton's penalty in injury time to secure victory.

Inverness started off brightly with Kai Kennedy bursting into the box and firing a low drive which didn’t cause East Fife goalkeeper Jordan Hart any trouble.

But East Fife had the best chances before the break. The first coming midway through the first half when Inverness full back Cameron Harper headed the ball to the edge of the box where Ryan Wallace connected with a volley that sailed over the bar.

Five minutes later Wallace had another chance as he was allowed to run unchallenged into the box but saw his shot go inches wide of the right post.

Inverness goalkeeper Cameron Mackay then produced a fantastic save to deny the Methil outfit the lead on the half hour mark.

He parried away Chris Higgins’ header from six yards out after he connected with Stewart Murdoch’s cross from the right wing as Inverness were holding on to stay level at half time.

But Inverness broke the deadlock midway through the second half when Sutherland was allowed a free header to connect with Harper’s corner kick and nod into the back of the net.

Miles Storey should have made it two late on when he beat the offside trap with only the goalkeeper to beat but Hart blocked his shot.

East Fife had a chance to bring the game to a shoot-out when Robbie Deas fouled Hamilton to concede a penalty.

But Mackay dived to his right to block his shot and give them the win.
