Goalkeepers told to push each other for starting place in first team at Nairn County
MANAGER Ross Tokely wants his goalkeepers Dylan Maclean and Lewis Munro to push each other for a starting place between the sticks at Nairn County this season.
He spoke after it was revealed that Lewis Munro has signed a new two and a half year contract to remain at Station Park.
The 19-year-old shot stopper is in his third season at the club having initially joined on loan from Inverness Caledonian Thistle in November 2022.
He has now started in Nairn County’s last four matches, including the 2-2 draw against Clachnacuddin at Station Park on Saturday.
Maclean was on the substitutes bench against Clachnacuddin last Saturday as he looks to fight his way back for a place in the first team.
Tokely says he wants both goalkeepers to push themselves further to prove to him why they should start instead of the other.
Speaking about Munro, Tokely said: He is a good trainer and rarely misses a session and as a coaching staff, we are looking forward to continuing working with him.
“You can definitely see improvement in Lewis’s game this season and we will keep working with him to try to continue that.
“It is up to him to keep working on his development and continue to push Dylan Maclean.
“We have two good goalkeepers in the squad just now which is important for competition and for them to continue to try to bring the best out in each other.”
Munro made his debut for Nairn County in the 2-1 home win over Turriff United in 2022 after joining on loan from Inverness Caledonian Thistle. He made the move to Station Park permanent at the start of last season, with his full debut coming against Huntly at home in February.
Nairn County played their first game in over a month in the Highland League when they were held to a 2-2 draw against Clachnacuddin last Saturday.
Ben Cormack gave Clachnacuddin the lead, but Ben Barron scored twice to put Nairn County 2-1 up. The hosts looked like they were going to hold on for victory until James Anderson scored an equaliser for a share of the points.
Nairn County will look to bounce back and find their first win since beating Wick Academy at the start of November when they take on Banks O’Dee at Station Park on Saturday.
