Inverness NFL star Jamie Gillan is in contention to be voted by the public to play in the Pro Bowl next month.

The Cleveland Browns punter has received a high number of votes from the public to play in the AFC team which will take on the NFC team in Orlando on January 20.

The Pro Bowl players are determined by the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches.

Each group’s vote counts one-third toward determining the 88 All-Star players who will be eligible for the Pro Bowl.

Gillan, who grew up in Inverness and attended Duncan Forbes Primary School and Culloden Academy, moved to America in 2013.

He had played rugby for years, first in the youth system at Highland Rugby Club then at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh.

Gillan is making his debut season in the NFL after playing college football with the University of Arkansas.

Cleveland are lying third in the AFC North with a 5–7 win loss record.

This season, three NFL games were played in London as part of an initiative to grow American Football globally.

Gillan says he would like to see an NFL team being established in the UK to give more players the chance to play American Football.

“I think if the UK was to get an NFL team, it would be really good,” he said.

“I think they could make a lot of money through that.

“Also I think it would open a lot more doors for guys in the UK, to play football and see what it’s like.

“I think you’d have a good fanbase and it would be a fun game for any away team coming to the UK to play against whichever team it would be here, so I think it’d be good.”
