Inverness Caledonian Thistle assistant manager Scott Kellacher has thrown down the gauntlet to the club’s fringe players, telling them to stake their claim for a starting spot when they get their chance on the pitch.

It seems almost inevitable that most players at the Caledonian Stadium will get some minutes in the coming weeks.

A hectic fixture calendar that has not been eased by the addition of a Scottish Cup replay will see them play five matches in the span two weeks even before the traditionally busy festive period.

Some degree of squad rotation, therefore, will be needed to get Inverness through their upcoming run of games.

Kellacher has challenged those players who have not been regular members of the starting 11 to show why they deserve a place in the side.

It may lead to some tricky decisions for Billy Dodds and the coaching staff, but they would have it no other way.

“We want these selection decisions to be hard,” he said.

“We want boys to come in and do well which might plant a seed in the gaffer’s head for the next game. We want good competition for places.

“It is healthier than players getting comfortable, thinking they will play every week. We want players to push throughout the squad. They might stake a claim if they do well on Tuesday.

“It’s never easy because you have to try and look after everybody – making sure everyone gets the right recovery after every game and making sure every place is covered.

“With four games coming up, they will all play their part, whether it is from the bench or whether they start. We need everybody.”
