John Robertson insists Caley Thistle’s games in hand are meaningless unless the club wins them.

On the face of it, the Caley Jags are still in a good position in the battle for play-off places, despite sitting eighth in the Championship table, thanks to the fixtures they still have to make up.

Five Saturdays in-a-row without a match mean that by the time Inverness take to the pitch against Greenock Morton tomorrow night, they will have played four fewer games than the majority of the teams above them.

However, Robertson will be impressing into his players that they can have no complacency just because they could make up ground, they still have to go out and perform.

“We’ve got games in hand over everybody, but they’re no good to us unless we manage to win them,” Robertson insisted.

“If somebody said to me would I like games in hand, or do I want an extra 10 or 12 points, I’d take the points on the board.

“Games in hand are irrelevant, because they’re worth nothing unless you win them.

“If you win your games in hand, you shoot up into the play-off spots and challenge for second place, if you lose them then you’re looking at the relegation play-offs.

“It’s all right people saying we’re okay because we’ve got games in hand, but we need to get the points.”

With such a backlog of fixtures to squeeze into the calendar, it will be crucial to get some winning momentum at the first opportunity.

Robertson says Caley Thistle’s squad are well aware of the situation they are in, and what is at stake tomorrow night.

“Morton are above us, we can close the gap to them, and then look forward to a game at home on the weekend,” Robertson said.

“The players know and understand the situation. Whilst we do have those games in hand, points on the board are always crucial.

“We need to get that winning run and put wins on the board quickly to get into a position to challenge.”
