Former Inverness Harrier Davie Ogilvie is celebrating three medals at the World Police and Fire Games – including a gold in the hammer throw.

The Alness raised athlete, who was part of the Inverness club in the 1990s, also won silvers in the shot putt and discus in his first time ever competing at the event in Rotterdam.

His participation has been a long time coming, though, with it being a target for years after earning plenty of success domestically, winning Scottish Masters and British Police events in the past.

Ogilivie, who now lives in Munlochy, has also competed in Highland Games, but due to the travel involved he has not been able to step up to the world stage.

The World Police and Fire Games were created by the Californian Police Association and are held every two years – mostly in North America, making it tricky for the likes of Ogilvie to enter from the other side of the Atlantic.

Last time it came to Europe was in 2013 in Belfast, but then Ogilvie missed out due to injury.

So to not just be able to compete this time around, but win two silvers and a gold medal with new personal bests in all three events was the stuff of dreams.

“I thought I had missed the boat, but then it was supposed to be in Rotterdam last year,” he explained.

“Covid put paid to that, and it was put off until this year.

“It’s like a mini-Olympic Games for the police and fire community.

“I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to be facing to be honest. You can look at previous results, but you never know who’s going to turn up. Going in I just wanted to get a medal of any colour, so I was dead chuffed to be able to do so well.

“Because it was the first time I was going, nobody knew me or what I would be throwing. I started with the discus, and I was leading going into the last round before a German boy beat me.

“I was a bit disappointed with that, but I was really pleased to get a silver. Then the shot putt came around and I got a silver in that. A Polish guy beat me by over a metre, so I couldn’t be too disappointed.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect in the hammer. I beat the nearest guy by about eight metres, so I was really chuffed. It was definitely a bucket list thing for me to do. It’s in Winnipeg next year, and I don’t think that will work, but we’ll see.”

Ogilvie’s new personal best distances coming away from Rotterdam are 33.23m in the discus, 11.45m in the shot putt and 35.40m in the hammer throw.
