The 20-year-old who was with Nairn County on a short-term deal last season after leaving Inverness in February, has agreed a two-year deal at Station Park.

It is the first signing made by Wayne Mackintosh who took over as manager of the club last month.

MacKay, who was also on loan at Nairn County in the 203/24 Highland League season, was one of a group of young players who looked set to play a big role for Inverness Caledonian Thistle with their financial issues limiting new signings.

In total, he would make 13 appearances for Caley Thistle’s first team.

After joining Nairn County in February, he made 11 appearances for the club.

Mackintosh was delighted to land one of the first targets he identified when he took over the post at the start of the month as he looks to put in place his squad for the start of the new season on Saturday, July 26.

Mackintosh said: “Calum has taken his time to weigh up his options and decide what he wants to do which was wise of him and I am really pleased that he has chosen to come to us.

“When I took over as Manager, I had a conversation with him right away and made it clear to him that I was very keen for him to be a part of the squad. After our season ended, he had the opportunity to go and train with Elgin City and he had a few offers from other clubs in the Highland League as well, so for him to have chosen to sign with us for the next few seasons is a huge boost.

“I have challenged Calum to not only get involved in creating chances for our strikers – which we already know is one of his key strengths – but to regularly get in among the goals himself too. We struggled for goals from the middle of the park last season and it is something we really need to improve on – we have not really had someone contributing regularly with goals from midfield since Andrew Macleod was here. It makes such a difference if we can get midfielders and wide players into double figures or pushing to get into double figures and I would love Calum to do that next season.

“We all know what he brings to the table and he is an exciting player to watch on his day. He will give us good deliveries from set pieces and creativity in the final third from open play. He knows the club well having been with us for the second half of last season and on loan the season before that, so I am sure he will settle in right away. Myself, Brian (Macleod) and Bobo (Martin MacDonald) are all really looking forward to working with him and helping him to develop his game and improve over the next few seasons.”
