DYLAN Smith scored as Arbroath took all three points to consign Inverness Caledonian Thistle to their first defeat in League One since October.

The defender, who is a former pupil of Smithton Primary School and Culloden Academy, is on loan at Arbroath from Ross County on a season long loan deal.

He nodded a cross into the box from close range past goalkeeper Musa Dibaga to give them the lead.

Gavin Reilly then pounced on a poor back pass from James Nolan and then charged towards goal before firing a low shot past Dibaga to wrap up all three points.

It was a poor afternoon for Inverness, who were reduced to 10 men in the first half when Robbie Thompson was sent off in the first half.

The defeat means Inverness are now 11 points behind Annan Athletic in eighth after they hammered bottom of the table Dumbarton 5-1.

It was their first defeat in League One since Inverness went down to a 3-1 defeat to Dumbarton on October 26.

Inverness started with the same 11 players which came from two goals behind to beat Montrose 3-2 at Links Park last weekend.

The only notable changes were on the substitutes bench with Corey Patterson replacing Szymon Rebilas as the replacement number two.

In a quiet first half, Inverness Caledonian Thistle found themselves down to 10 men when Robbie Thompson clipped Fraser Taylor, stopping from him launching a counter attack. He picked up his second yellow card when he was sent off 10 minutes before half time.

Arbroath went ahead seven minutes into the second half when Ryan Dow’s cross found the head of Smith and he nodded into the net to take the lead.

Inverness battled for an equaliser and came close when James Nolan’s cross into the box found Adam Mackinnon from 10 yards out who was unable to fire on target.

Arbroath killed the game off in injury time when Nolan slipped and lost control of the ball, allowing Reilly to pounce and drive towards the box before firing a low shot past Dibaga.

Inverness will look to get their campaign back on track when they head to Stenhousemuir next weekend.
