Former Inverness Caley Thistle man Mitch Curry announces retirement from football as ex-Middlesbrough and Sunderland player hangs up boots at 25

A former Inverness Caledonian Thistle winger has announced his retirement from the game at 25 years old.

Mitch Curry spent time on loan in the Highland capital as a 20-year-old in the 2019/20 season, making 15 appearances and scoring twice – once against Alloa Athletic in the Challenge Cup, and once against Morton in the Championship.

He joined from Middlesbrough having already been out on loan at Harrogate Town the previous season.

After his recall by Boro, Curry would briefly join English sixth-tier side Gateshead before the Covid-19 pandemic scuppered the second half of that season.

In the summer of 2020, he would join Sunderland, but again struggled to make a first team breakthrough.

That would lead Curry to signing for Fort Lauderdale and Hartford Athletic in the Unites States, before returning to the UK and spending time at Darlington, Blyth Spartans and Whitby Town.

However, despite being just 25 years old, he has now announced that he is hanging up his boots.

Posting on social media, he wrote: “I’ve decided it’s time to officially hang up the boots.

“What a journey it’s been and I’m very grateful to have represented some great clubs.

“I have met so many amazing people along the way and lived the dream playing the game I love, all whilst travelling the world.

“It has been a career full of crazy ups and downs but one a 10-year-old me would have been proud of.

“I gave it my everything and I can’t wait to not do one hour of stretching to get myself on the pitch everyday.

“Thank you to everyone, my family, friends, teammates and coaches who have supported me. I am forever grateful for the people in my live and I’m very excited for the next chapter.”
