BILLY Ferries came to the fore when he secured victory at the North Golf Alliance fixture at Thurso Golf Club.

The Tain golfer went out in one under par 34 then came home in 38 for the winning scratch score of 72.

On his way to victory, Ferries had a bogey at the fifth but pulled it back with successive birdies in the seventh and eighth holes.

He was four ahead of Thurso golfer Jim Sangster who finished in second place.

A birdie two on the ninth hole took Thurso’s Andrew Main to the turn in 36 but he fell back to 42 for the next nine holes finishing with two double bogey sixes.

His net 69 was still good enough to win the low handicap section by three from Tain’s David Clark.

Tain’s second place in the next section was filled by Charlie Finlayson.

His nett 71 from 10 handicap was beaten on the back nine count back by Thurso golfer Angus Cameron who after his triple bogey on the 13th hole covered the next five holes in 22 to win his £10 voucher.

Several Ross-shire junior golfers took part in the North District’s Junior Matchplay Championships at Forres.

Muir of Ord’s Scott Mackenzie and Fortrose and Rosemarkie’s Jack Mann met in the first round.

Mann won this tie on the last green and then his next round game by the same margin but when he came up against Ross Gordon from Inverness in the final he was beaten by 2 and 1.
