John Robertson will welcome two players back into his Inverness Caledonian Thistle squad for tonight’s Betfred Cup match against Cowdenbeath – but Shane Sutherland will miss out through injury.

The striker was forced off in Caley Thistle’s opening match at Hearts last Tuesday with a hamstring strain, and although it is not thought to be serious he will be unavailable this evening.

However, defender Danny Devine could come back into the fold while James Vincent is also in line to return to the squad for tonight’s game.

Their returns come at a good time for Robertson, who continues to build up to Saturday’s Championship curtain-raiser away at Dunfermline.

Although he will be building up players’ fitness ahead of the league campaign, he is not looking past Cowdenbeath, expecting whatever side he selects to pick up three points.

“Dunfermline will be a very important match, so we looked at it on Monday – Danny Devine, James Vincent and Wallace Duffy were all back in training which gives us options,” Robertson revealed.

“We have made it quite plain that the first two matches in particular in the cup were to be used as pre-season for building up minutes, and that will be the case against Cowdenbeath.

“One or two lads coming back need a game, and we will play them, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that we want to win.

“We’re not underestimating Cowdenbeath in any shape or form, but there will be two or three lads playing to get minutes because quite simply they need it.”

Tonight will also be a final chance for players to stake their claim in the team, with Robertson adding: “Everybody has a chance of being in contention.

“If two or three of the lads play well, then that gives us options, and that’s all that we’re looking for going forward to Dunfermline.”
