GOALKEEPER Jack Newman says he came to Inverness Caledonian Thistle with the ambition of winning League One and getting the club back into the Championship.

The 22-year-old has arrived at Inverness from Premiership club Dundee United on a season long loan.

He is set to become the regular number one with Inverness Caledonian Thistle this season, having started both Premier Sports Cup group stage matches against Annan Athletic and Bonnyrigg Rose.

While getting regular first team football at Inverness, Newman says he agreed to join the club as he believed they are good enough to win League One.

He says everyone at Inverness shares his ambition and believes they are capable of winning the title at the first time of asking.

He said: “I want to come here and play first and foremost and also play every game.

“Everyone from the outside will be asking if we can get the club straight back up.

“That is what everyone wants as fans, players and staff. It needs to be a big push from us all and help the club get back to where it belongs in the higher divisions.

“That is the reason that I came here as I want to win something.

“You saw what Falkirk did last year, but it is no easy task.

“However for a club the size of this one, you need to aim for everything you can.”

Newman came through the youth academy at Sunderland, before moving to Scotland to sign for Dundee United in 2020.

During his time in Scotland, he has spent time on loan at The Spartans and Peterhead.

He is relishing playing regular first team football with Inverness Caledonian Thistle. He said when he was offered the opportunity to come on loan, he was determined to take it.

“I am loving it here and it is exactly what I needed,” said Newman.

“When I heard about there was a possibility about coming up here, it was a yes from me.

“It is rare you get the chance to play for such a big club from an early age. It is an honour to play here.”

Despite only being 22, Newman will be considered among middle aged in the Inverness squad this season, which is set to feature a number of youngsters that have recently graduated from the club’s academy.

Newman believes the squad has a good mix of youth and experience to be a success this campaign. He says he will also be on hand to offer advice to teenage players, especially those in defence.

“The changing room is really good and everyone knows the task in hand.

“Everyone knows the situation, Billy Mckay and Danny Devine can offer guidance to the players, especially the ones coming up from the under-18’s.

“Any time I can help them out, that is part of my job as a goalkeeper, to help secure the defence and keep the ball out of the net.

“I have not played a huge amount of games, but in the games I have played, I have picked up things off top players.”
