Caley Thistle's season could be defined by Dundee result, says Brad McKay
Brad McKay says tomorrow’s result against Dundee could define Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s season in the Scottish Championship.
Inverness are 13 points behind league leaders Dundee United and are only hanging on in the play-off zone in fourth on goal difference from Arbroath in fifth.
Victory at the Caledonian Stadium tomorrow would see Inverness leapfrog Dundee into third place. McKay says the scoreline at full-time could lay down a marker for the club’s intentions for this campaign.
“This game could define our season,” he said.
“Is it going to be one of these seasons where we fall away and battle for third and a play-off spot?
“Or do we kick up again and pick up a decent run of form and challenge for top?
“I don’t think we’re a million miles away doing that.”
Inverness have fell behind in the title race due to only picking up four points in their last five games, including a disappointing draw at home to Alloa and defeat away to Morton.
McKay says these are the kind of games Inverness need to start winning.
“It is not the games against Dundee United that win or lose you a league.
“It’s the games against Morton and Alloa.
“No disrespect to them but they’re the ones we think we should win and we’ve ended up not winning.
“Come the end of the season the head-to-heads with Dundee United take care of themselves.
“But it is the other games that have killed us.
“But if we can kick on from here we have a right chance.
“But if we don’t is it going to be a play-off spot again?”
After requiring a penalty shoot-out win against Clyde after a goalless 90 minutes to reach the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup semi final, coach Barry Wilson said the squad would be focussing on finishing in training.
McKay said training had focused on improving as a team and despite scraping past Clyde, he believes the result has been a catalyst to confidence improving.
“It was a platform for us to go off on,” he said.
“It was a clean sheet, it wasn’t pretty but a cup tie is what it is.
“We needed to get through it no matter how we did it.
“There is a couple of games that we haven’t scored in and we have conceded and that is what we have had to look at in training.
“Boys seem to be overthinking with the extra touch.
“When boys have confidence they take the touch and shoot.
“It will come, but at the moment as a team we are lacking in confidence.”
