The midfielder has two winners medals from his time at Caley Thistle, the most recent coming just last year when Inverness were crowned champions of Scottish football’s second tier.

Duncan is well aware of the difficulties the First Division poses, but as one of seven new arrivals at County during the close season, he is confident that manager Derek Adams has put together a squad that has the potential to be in contention for league honours.

“We believe we can make a real challenge for it this season,” he said.

“We’re not going to be shouting our mouths off that we are going to win the league, but we’re going in the right direction.

“The way the squad has progressed with players coming in to strengthen it, then I don’t see any reason why we can’t be challenging.

“We know it’s going to be very difficult because it’s one of the hardest leagues to get out of, but there’s boys like myself who have experience of winning this division before and hopefully we can help the others along and it will all come good at the end of the season.”

County’s pre-season schedule continued on Tuesday night with a 2-0 triumph at Clach courtesy of goals in either half from Grant Munro and Mark Corcoran.

They were scheduled to play their second game in the same number of days last night at Forres Mechanics, but Duncan believes they now have the squad to cope with the demands of matches that come in quick succession.

“There is good strength and depth,” said the 30-year-old.”That gives the gaffer a problem as he has to find out the team that is going to work.

“All the players can do is work hard and try to impress by doing the right things. If you are doing well then I’m sure you’ll be playing, but if not then you won’t be.”
