The 14-year-old Northern Counties’ spin bowler has been called up to the national squad to face Yorkshire, Northumberland and Lincolnshire in an ECB Cup competition during July.

The Glenurquhart High School fourth year pupil, also plays at regional level for Caledonian Highlanders who play home matches based in Aberdeen and Dundee.

The spin bowler will make his debut for Scotland and is looking forward to testing himself at a higher level.

“I am looking forward to a fantastic experience and it is great to represent my country,” says Thorp.

“I have played for Caledonian Highlanders for three years and have become a senior player this year.

“One of the Scotland coaches watches regional games and looks for players to play for the national team.

“I wasn’t expecting to get selected this year, but I was invited to go for trial and things went good. I have been selected to play in three games and i’m looking forward to it.”

Thorp is the only cricketer from the Highlands who has been selected for the squad.

He first got involved in cricket when he joined the junior section at Northern Counties when he was five.

He started playing for the club’s senior teams in 2019 and is the youngest player in the North of Scotland Cricket League.

Last season, he was the joint highest wicket taker in the league, with 12 wickets.

Thorp is keen to show how strong Scottish cricket is at junior level.

“This is a great chance for us to show how well Scottish cricket is developing.

“My ambition is to see how the next two years go and challenge myself if it is something I can develop further and play for Scotland at senior level.”
