Carson pleased Highland managed to keep Watsonians out in Scottish Cup

Beating one of the new Super6 sides in the Scottish Cup was an eye-catching way to start the season for Highland Rugby Club, but head coach Dave Carson was just as pleased with his defence as he was with his attack.

The Greens defeated Watsonians 32-3 last week.

They had to battle to a 10-3 half time lead, before running away with the cup clash in the second period.

It was that resoluteness when defending their own try line that Carson found so impressive, and he thinks their first half display was key.

“We needed a massive defensive effort in the first half to keep them down,” he explained.

“It was four fantastic team tries, lots of touches of the ball coming from deep.

“But it was probably more pleasing that they never passed the try line all game, we really stood up to their pressure."
