Erin Green says Inverness Craig Dunain jumped at the opportunity to get more involved with the Rainbow Laces campaign.
The 2021 activation started yesterday, so over the next two weeks clubs and athletes from across sport will be promoting LGBT+ inclusion through social media as well as rainbow coloured apparel and wearing rainbow laces on match days.
For women’s vice-captain Green, it was a no-brainer that the club sign up to it this year.
“It’s about showing that the club is welcome for everybody,” she explained.
“We try to promote it throughout everywhere. The Rainbow Laces campaign is to show support for LGBT+, so it shows that we’re supportive and open to everybody.
“All in all it’s just about knowing that everyone is included.
“It’s a good campaign – quite a few of the girls already wear rainbow laces, and they have done for years, myself included.
“Being able to offer that to everybody – we’re not going to force anyone to wear them, but allowing people to wear them and show a bit of support is a good thing.
“When you go to other clubs you see them wearing them as well, so it’s quite good.”
One of the more pleasing aspects of this year’s campaign has been how Scottish Rugby has really pushed it to member clubs.
“It’s phenomenal,” Green said.
“Other places push it as well, and it’s finally coming from the actual SRU who are providing the laces for free, so it’s amazing.
“You just have to order a pack, it’s funded already. It gives us something to promote on social media as well, because we’re definitely going to drive it.
“There’s obviously Rainbow Laces Day, I don’t think we’re training that day but we’re going to push it through social media and get everybody to put the laces on their trainers or something and wear them for the day.”
