Continental rulings could give Inverness Caledonian Thistle fresh reconstruction hope

Inverness Caledonian Thistle have been given fresh hope of Premiership football after a French court ruling blocked relegation of Toulouse and Amiens from Ligue 1.

The implications of the judgement by France’s highest administrative court would have resonated at yesterday’s SPFL meeting.

As the Highland News went to press, a decision was expected to be made on whether Scotland’s clubs would give Hearts’ plan for a 14-team top-flight another hearing.

The Tynecastle club is facing relegation to the Championship after the Covid-19 outbreak terminated the 2019-20 season with them four points adrift at the table’s foot with eight games to play.

Hearts have appointed a QC to consider a multi-million pound legal action against the league body, arguing restructuring with no relegation in any of the leagues is the only fair resolution to the campaign.

The implications for ICT are immense – the club finished second in the Championship and would be promoted to a new 14-team set-up. The best-case alternative for Inverness seems to be a shortened Championship season of 27 games beginning in October.

Even if clubs rule against Hearts’ 14-14-14 plan – with Rangers also proposing a new 14-14-18 set-up embracing Old Firm colts’ teams – developments in Europe could embolden Hearts chairman Ann Budge to seek a legal solution from outwith football.
