Clachnacuddin host Corbett Cup for first time

Grant Street Park hosted one of the top young football tournaments in the city for the first time last week.

The home of Clachnacuddin FC saw the annual Corbett Cup take place which is the annual football tournament organised by Merkinch Football Academy.

The tournament previously took place at the grounds of Merkinch Primary School but due to construction work taking place it was switched to the Highland League club.

Academy head coach Peter Corbett, who the tournament is named after, said it was a fitting venue for what has come an important competition in youth football in the city.

“Over 150 boys and girls took part in a competitive but enjoyable tournament. There was great support on the day from mums, dads, grandparents and others keen to see the youngsters perform.

“The tournament always attracts at least 100 players and it was the same again.

“Due to the major construction work going on at Merkinch Primary School we are grateful to Clachnacuddin for the use of their ground.

“It was the first time we had played at the stadium.”

He added: “It was great being able to play at Grant Street Park.

“Due to its success, perhaps we could look at hosting the tournament again there next year.

“This tournament is an event for Merkinch and Clachnacuddin Football Club play a major part of the Merkinch community.

“I am sure they would be able to help us out again in the future.”

There were four age group tournaments which took place at the stadium, resulting in four different teams picking up silverware.

In the Primary 1-3 competition, Dalneigh were crowned red champions after they defeated Central in the final.

Milton Athletic also had cause for celebration winning the sky blue championship after defeating Crown in the Primary 4-5 final.

In the Primary 6-7 competition Kinmylies defeated Merkinch in the final to take the blue championship.

In the girls competition, Merkinch defeated Dalneigh in the final to take the purple championship.
