CLACHNACUDDIN Women manager Bobby Beckwith says he was still proud of his players despite suffering a 7-0 hammering to Lewis and Harris in the Highlands and Islands League Cup final.

In a closely contested first half at the Caledonian Stadium when the game was goalless, the Western Isles outfit ran riot in the second half.

Clach suffered major blows during the match when left-back Franci Hutchison and striker Betty Ross were forced off due to injury.

Beckwith says losing two of their star players proved too much for his side against a ruthless Lewis and Harris team.

“Franci had an Achilles injury and we had to take her off.

“Betty pulled a hamstring and we had to take her off. When we lost both players, we were up against it.

“It definitely changed the game for us.

“But we are not using those as excuses, we had some bad luck but on the day our girls weren’t good enough

“Lewis and Harris deserved to win but we don’t think they deserved to win by seven goals.

“I don’t think the scoreline reflected how well we played.”

It was the first time the Highlands and Islands League Cup final had been contested with the league only being established this year.

Beckwith says it was a great occasion for women’s football and was only disappointed his team lost so heavily.

“I am still proud of the girls for reaching the final,” he said.

“Their attitude and commitment to the team has been fantastic.

“It is not often they will get the chance to play on the pitch at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and being part of the first women’s cup final.

“I won’t be silly though, we didn’t enjoy getting beat in the final.

“But we did enjoy at least being part of the occasion.”
