Three boxers from Inverness City Boxing Club are in the process of turning professional.

Adian Williamson, George Stewart and Calum Turnbull have all signed with Stevie Maguire’s gym in Glenrothes after impressing on the international amateur stage with City.

The last time all three boxers were in action before the pandemic, they each won gold medals at an International Box Cup in Cyprus.

They could return as professionals though, with just medicals needed before the process is done.

“Starting young is the key to most sports – whether that’s boxing, football or anything else,” Inverness City head coach Laurie Redfern explained.

“These boys are at the right stage to move on to the next level.

“They have had over 100 bouts between them, so to turn professional now is about right.

“They have served their apprenticeship. Between them they have won schoolboy, junior and district titles, they all have something in them.”

All going well, the trio could be looking at stepping into the ring as professionals for the first time in September.

Redfern takes immense pride in the progress of Williamson, Stewart and Turnbull’s so far, but he trusts that they are joining the right stable of boxers.

“This is the first time I’ve been able to bring boys through from a really young age,” he added.

“When I first started in Inverness, most of the boys were older, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

“I’ve been friends with Stevie Maguire for 30 years now through boxing. We went to the Commonwealth Games together, we’ve done a lot.

“He has a very strong stable of professional boxers in Glenrothes, so we’ve got a great camp to go to for top-level sparring.”
