Inverness defeated Queen of the South 1-0 at the Caledonian Stadium on Saturday as they recorded their fourth win out of their last five matches.

It was their 10th league win of the season and if it was not for going into administration and suffering a 15 point deduction in October, they would be two points clear at the top.

Instead they are in ninth place and still two points from safety after Annan Athletic’s shock 3-1 win at Kelty Hearts.

But with 13 games remaining, Inverness are only 10 points off Queen of the South in fourth place and a potential Championship play-off space.

Longstaff said with the number of games remaining, he admitted the possibility of a top four finish is within their reach.

But he says their primary aim is to catch Annan Athletic in eighth place and get out of the bottom two.

He said: “We have four wins in our last five and we have shown we can bounce back from defeats quite well.

“We got beat midweek at Queen of the South and then we go and win at Alloa and another win against Queen of the South.

“We are not going to win every game until the end of the season. That is unrealistic. But it is how we bounce back is massive.”

Speaking about a possible top-four finish, Longstaff said: “It is not out of the question completely, we are focussing on getting out of the relegation play-off zone. If we can do that, that would be a huge achievement for us. Ten points away from the top four, you do look at it. But there is still a two point gap with Annan we need to close. That is the most important thing right now.”

Longstaff admitted it was a scrappy match but felt Inverness were worth all three points.

He said: “It was a bit of a scrappy game but overall we were the better team.

“We had a few chances towards the end of the second half. But we controlled the game pretty well.

“The first 20 minutes I thought that we started pretty slow. But when we went 1-0 up, they had a couple of chances on the counter attack but nothing too major. I couldn’t see them scoring unless we made a mistake. We saw it out well.”
