Inverness Caledonian Thistle secure League One safety after one-sided win over champions Arbroath coupled with defeat for Annan Athletic
Inverness Caledonian Thistle are safe in League One after a comprehensive 3-0 win over champions Arbroath.
Keith Bray opened the scoring for Inverness in the ninth minute, getting ahead of his marker to head into the net.
The Caley Jags were then awarded a penalty in the 23rd minute, when Billy Mckay was brought down by Aidan McAdams while trying to go around the visiting goalkeeper.
Paul Allan stepped up, and although McAdams looked to have stopped it, the ball squirmed under him and just about made it over the line to make it 2-0 to Inverness.
Mckay got through one-on-one with the Arbroath keeper shortly before half time, but this time McAdams was able to make a good save to deny him.
Alfie Stewart also went close with an effort on the brink of the interval, but his shot went just over the bar.
It did not take long into the second half for Inverness to make it 3-0 though, with Mckay curling a brilliant effort from the corner of the box beyond McAdams’ reach.
There was a concern for Matthew Strachan around 15 minutes before the end, with the academy graduate being forced off through injury and replaced by James Nolan.
However, there was to be no late drama on the scoreline as Caley Thistle sent a season-high crowd of over 2300 fans home celebrating.
Annan Athletic were also defeated 3-1 by Dumbarton, meaning that Inverness are four points clear of the relegation place with one game left to play.
