Inverness Caledonian Thistle ended the season with a stalemate as they drew with Ayr United at the Caledonian Stadium.

The result meant little though at full time as with the play-offs out of their reach, they were already condemned to finish the season in fifth place.

Opponents Ayr United will also stay in the Championship thanks to the draw as Greenock Morton face a relegation play-off after being held by Arbroath.

Caley Thistle took the lead after five minutes when Sean Welsh sent a ball over the top of the Ayr United defence to find Daniel MacKay who fired a low drive past Peter Morrison.

The hosts controlled the majority of the first half without really threatening, but 10 minutes before half time Roddy MacGregor’s long ball found David Carson on the right wing.

His cross into the box found the head of Nikolay Todorov who couldn’t get enough power on his header to find a way past goalkeeper Peter Morrison.

But Ayr were awarded a penalty six minutes before half time when Robbie Deas was judged to have fouled Jack Baird.

Aaron Muirhead sent Ridgers the wrong way as his low drive from the spot found the bottom right corner.

But Inverness were also awarded a penalty a minute into the second half when Sam Roscoe caught the ankle of MacGregor.

Welsh powered the ball past Morrison to regain the lead for Inverness.

Ayr levelled again midway through the second half when Josh Todd connected with a cross from the right wing from Joe Chalmers into the box and fired a low drive past Ridgers.

Neither team were able to find a winner as both teams picked up a point on the final day of the season.
