TERRY Butcher will step up his bid to fill the void left by Adam Rooney after the out of contract striker joined English Championship side Birmingham City.

The 23-year-old, who was Caley Thistle's top goalscorer for the past two seasons, finally ended speculation over his future by agreeing a two-year deal with Birmingham after deciding against signing for Inverness for another year.

Despite the loss of Rooney, Butcher was happy to see the player taking that step up to the next level after ending his three-year stay in the Highland Capital.

"I'm not disappointed that he's gone to Birmingham," he said. "We made him the best offer we could, but we knew it would not be as much as other clubs were putting on the table.

"I spoke to him on the phone and I just wished him all the best. I now have to try and fill that gap by unearthing another gem."

One player who will not be staking his claim to be Rooney's replacement is former Accrington Stanley and Tranmere Rovers striker Terry Gornell.

Despite reports this week that the player was set to sign for Inverness, he has opted instead to join English League Two side Shrewsbury Town.
