Inverness Caledonian Thistle have completed the signing of veteran defender Kirk Broadfoot on a one-year deal.

The 36-year-old left Kilmarnock at the end of last season, and had been the subject of interest from other clubs before being tempted north to the Caley Jags.

He will wear the number 15, and is expected to go straight into the squad for tomorrow night's Premier Sports Cup opening group match at home against Peterhead.

Broadfoot is the latest move by new ICT head coach Billy Dodds to bring experience to his youthful squad, following moves for former Ross County duo Billy Mckay and Michael Gardyne.

Caley Thistle's squad that narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season was a very young one, which bodes well for the club's future if they continue to develop, but Dodds felt that it was important to bring in some more established names to help them along.

"I think we needed experience," Dodds explained.

"Last year in the short time I was here, I thought that was what the squad lacked – that's why I've brought in Michael Gardyne, Billy Mckay and now Kirk Broadfoot.

"There's a lot of youth here, which has been a big part of our remit at Inverness for many years, so I'm trying to get the balance right with the right amount of experience, the right amount of players in the middle and the right amount of youth.

"I think I've got hungry players, players with experience but still with that desire to do well. We have the youth and the legs with the experience and quality to go along with that.

"When you're building a squad, you look at what you're missing, and that's what we've done. We're nearly there, and I'm quite happy with what I've got."
