INVERNESS Caledonian Thistle manager John Robertson admitted his players looked tired as they laboured to a win over East Fife.
After a gruelling 3–3 draw at Raith Rovers before being defeated on penalties four days previously, Robertson was happy to end the League Cup campaign with a 1–0 win.
East Fife had a number of chances in the first half to take the lead, but were prevented by a superb display by Cammy Mackay in goal.
Inverness improved in the second half and took the lead through Shane Sutherland which they managed to hold on to, thanks to a Mackay penalty save in injury time.
But Robertson admitted his team felt the effects of Kirkcaldy and was happy to come away with a positive result.
“I thought in the first half we looked a bit leggy because we had an intense match against Raith Rovers,” he said.
"We tried to freshen it up a wee bit and did some nice stuff.
“But we’re indebted to Cammy for a wonderful save in the first half.
“We talked about that five per cent extra to move the ball a bit quicker.
“We got that goal in the second half and it was a great goal by Shane. We had a good spell where we could have killed the match.
"But we looked tired in the last 10 minutes and East Fife through everything forward and the penalty is unlucky.
"Robbie Deas slipped and caught the lad but it is a penalty kick.
"Once more Cammy Mackay shows his worth and produces the save and we felt that we did just enough to win."
