Inverness Caley Thistle striker will be out for weeks with injury but return to top of League One
INVERNESS Caledonian Thistle have suffered a blow as striker Billy McKay will be out for a number of weeks through injury.
The player/assistant coach, who missed yesterday’s 1-0 win over Montrose, could be out for five weeks after suffering a hamstring injury.
The 37-year-old, has been in good form this season, and is now joint top goalscorer with seven goals, following Chanka Zimba scoring for Inverness yesterday.
Head coach Scott Kellacher says it is a blow to lose McKay on the pitch considering the form he has been in this season.
He said: “Billy is going to be out for four or five weeks with a grade two hamstring. We got confirmation of that on Thursday.
“It’s a really bad one for us, especially when he came on last week and scored for us.
“He’s played a massive part for us so far this season and he will do again.
“He is hurting, but he’s going to be a big player for us and will play his part throughout the season.”
Kellacher says he emphasised the importance of the scoreline at half time with Queen of the South in front and was pleased with the second half.
“Somebody mentioned the scores. I never usually get caught up in that, but I did say to them ‘listen, if you want it, you need to really go for it in the second half’
“If you do, there’s a good chance you will be top.
“But there’s a long way to go. There’s a difference between getting to the top of the league and staying there.
“Having that mindset and mentality to remain top of the league, that’s a different kettle of fish altogether.
“That’s something we’re trying to drive into them - it gets harder.
“Teams want to beat you even more when you’re top of the table.
“All the other results today were great for us, but we need to make sure we stay focused on ourselves.”
