Bannerman cruises to victory at Garioch 5k
Jenny Bannerman sliced nearly a minute off the women’s course record at Sunday’s Run Garioch 5k.
She recorded 17:00, compared with the previous figure of 17:51, just three seconds behind the winner, Jordan Chapman of Aberdeen and over two minutes ahead of the next woman.
Chapman (16:57) built up a 40-metre lead with a kilometre to go but Bannerman looked as if she would catch him until he saw her coming and produced one final effort.
“It was competitive with a few men for the first 3k but they fell away on one of the hills, leaving Jordan and myself,” she said.
“He then got away from me but although I was pulling him in quite quickly over the last quarter mile he spotted me over his shoulder and found one last sprint.”
Inverness Harriers’ men took 10th in Sunday’s Scottish Six Stage Road Relay championship.
Stephen MacKay got the Inverness team off to a strong start in seventh place on the opening leg before handing over to John Newsom.
Craig Campbell, Gordon Lennox and Luke Shaw followed before Sean Chalmers ran the second fastest long lap of the day.
Highland Hill Runners took several awards at the North District hill running championships.
Veteran Catriona Morrison won the women’s title from Harrier Caroline Marwick and Philippa Gullet was third. Karen Lyons and Dagmar Borrowman followed Morrison to sweep the veteran women’s class.
Harrier Rob Burnett split Jack Trevelyan and Willie Nicolson in the male veterans, but there was a HHR one-two from Fraser MacKintosh and Stuart Malcolm in the over-50s.
