Athletics: Inverness Harrier claims veteran 5k title at Clydebank
Inverness Harrier Jenny Bannerman was successful in her first race in a veteran 5k.
Entering the Scottish Veteran Harriers 5k in Clydebank on Wednesday night, Bannerman posted a time of 17:13 to win the women’s title.
It was not the first time she had taken part in the race, but it was the first time she was eligible for the prize.
Still, Bannerman insists it does not mark a change of focus for her going forward, as she will still look to be competitive in mainstream racing.
“When I became eligible for vets’ competition I decided to do a few of the races, but I have no plans yet for any major switch from mainstream racing,” Bannerman stressed.
“I’d done this race before as an under age guest and really enjoyed it, so it was great to return as an official competitor.”
This event was part of a series organised by the Scottish Veteran Harriers for athletes over 35, which sees races take place throughout the calendar year with some contributing points towards the HIRMS race series.
It is separate from the Scottish Athletics national championship, where Bannerman has had podium successes in the past as a silver medallist in 2018, and as a member of the Inverness Harriers trio who won team gold in 2019.
Bannerman has had a successful return to racing in 2023 since becoming a mum for the first time.
While perhaps not racing as prolifically as she did beforehand, she proved she can still compete by claiming victory at the Nairn 10k and Miltonduff 10k, which both took place in March.
