Academy boosting students of shinty in Inverness

Over 370 primary school kids in Inverness are now playing shinty.

THREE years ago there was no shinty played at primary school level in Inverness. Now thanks to Inverness Shinty Academy it has become one of the fastest growing sports at youth level in the city with over 370 kids playing every week.

And the sport is continuing to grow in popularity with more children predicted to pick up a caman in the future.

The Academy, which was established in 2015 by National Division side Inverness Shinty Club, has helped the sport grow at youth level and now holds training sessions with 15 primary schools in the city with the help of 30 volunteer coaches.

Club development officer Drew McNeil says in the space of three years, the game has gone from non-existent at primary school level to one of the most popular sports in Inverness.
