An incredible fundraising effort by a young autistic lad from Nairn has helped create an invaluable resource for carers of people with neurodevelopmental conditions.

The Pines Highland website, launched last week, offers support and advice on autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions for parents, carers and care professionals in the Highlands.

Paid for from cash raised last summer by nine-year-old Andrew Ochojna, the National Autistic Society (NAS) Scotland project offers a wealth of essential information for those who need it.

The plucky youngster, who has autism and dyspraxia, hit the headlines back in June after he and his family raised £2000 by cycling the 24-mile Dava Way from Forres to Grantown.

The Pines Highland neurodevelopmental service, based at Drummond Road in Inverness, is a multi-agency initiative backed by Highland Council and NHS Highland.

Alison Footitt, Highland information officer for the NAS, said: “The website offers an incredible amount of new information for people to access, including support videos.

“We know that accessing good quality information is essential for people, but is very difficult because of the pandemic and the geography in Highland.

“It gives lots of details about neurodevelopmental conditions and how to support children and young people, as well as more information about services from the Pines team.”
