Forecasters are warning of widespread ice, with snow showers on higher ground.

A MET Office yellow weather warning for ice warning comes into force at 6pm this evening, with forecasters urging motorists to take care as the temperature falls.

Outbreaks of rain are to clear this evening, allowing the mercury to fall sharply overnight.

Ice is expected to be a problem on many routes, with the warning set to remain in force until 10am on Saturday.

"Outbreaks of rain will clear to scattered showers by Friday evening with temperatures then falling quickly allowing icy stretches to develop on untreated surfaces, especially where sheltered from the westerly winds," said a Met Office spokesman.

"Showers will become increasingly wintry overnight, some heavy with hail over Scotland and adding to the ice risk but fresh lying snow will be confined to hills.

"Settling snow levels will range from about 200 metres in north-west Scotland to around 300 metres in north-west England and Northern Ireland.

"The public should be aware of the risk of icy stretches on roads and pavements."
